Fear is Good
Edward Suhadi comment One Comment

As I have said in my personal blog, I’m making a movie tomorrow with Rene. Yes, that Rene.

And right now, I have trouble sleeping.

I’m afraid.

There’s so many things that I am afraid of.

I’m afraid the power will go down, I’m afraid the lighting will be terrible, the cast will do awful acting, the camera will break, the framing will be horrible, the focus will be off, the sound will be crappy, but most of all, I’m afraid that the movie is gonna suck. Like really-really-black-hole kinda suck.

But then again, fear is good. This is what I always tell my boys and gals whenever they are afraid of the job coming in front of them.

Fear is good, because it means you’re doing something that you’ve never done before. And in the name of progress and growth and change, that is a very good thing.

Fear is good, because you are taking risk in new ventures, a better way of doing things, or a project that you always dreamed of.

Fear is good, because it means that you’re still grounded. You stil remember that you have limitations, and you still oh-so stupid compared to a lot of people that has done this thing right.

Fear is good, because you know you still need to learn so much.

Fear is good, because you still believe, however perfect you planned your project, there’s still an X factor (God factor in my book) that will ultimately decide the fate of your outcome.

In his excellent book The War of Art, Stefen Pressfield even said that whenever you feel afraid of something, a project, a plan, or a direction that you consider of going, that is The Resistance doing his thing, blocking you from your success, from your ultimate fate. What should we do then? We push through, we ignore the flesh and just believe. (An excellent read by the way, you should look it up.)

So remember, whenever you feel jittery, afraid of that presentation or executing that risky project, you’re on the right track. Push through.

Edward

PS: I wrote a similar post about making my first tiramisu
