Relasi Bukan Prestasi

I ran into this article from Gizmodo.

It is about the first panorama shot from the top of the tallest building in the world, which is The Burj Khalifa in Dubai – standing at 830 metres high. It is a majestic view to see. Here is the tallest building in the world:

What tickled me is the closing paragraph:

And, until China builds its 838 meters Sky City building in 90 days, this is the tallest man-made point of view you’re going to get.

Wow. If you’re the guy that just now built the tallest building in the world: that’s gotta SUCK!

I mean here it is your tallest building in the world, going up almost a kilometre to the sky, all grand and mind-boggling and majestic, but hey wait, there’s another one coming up, an it is going to be taller just 8 meters from the one you just built.

8 meters is shorter than most bamboo poles.

And what they’re gonna do then? Change the title in their website to “The Second Tallest Building In The World” ? If you’re the guy that take pride in being number one, like I said, it’s gonna suck.

This reminds me.

I once attend a weekend church retreat called CHOICE. Way back, almost 10 years ago.

In one of the sessions we talked about this statement: Relasi dan bukan prestasi. Meaning: ‘Relationships over achievements.

The facilitators shared about the lessons they themselves had learn in life, of how relationships matter a lot more than the achievements you made.

Being loved and loving people, being respected and respecting people, being important in people’s life and having important people in your life.

It really struck a chord with me. I have been remembering it ever since: Relasi bukan prestasi.

Mind you this is 10 years ago before all the books and blog about life balancing and that kinda stuff, so what I have been hearing is: Be the best, be number one, be the highest, climb the ladder, be on top, whatever it takes.

If you’re the type of guy that like to be the first, to be on top, then just wait, there’s going to be someone just 8 meters taller than you. Then suddenly you’re number two and nobody remembers who’s the second winner of American Idol last season.

And if on you’re on your way up you shattered a lot of relationships, broke a lot of promises, destroyed your integrity, dissapoint your loved ones and made a handful of enemies and bitter people, well, at least for me, that’s not how I want to live my life.

Control your envy, ego and pride, focus on people, impact and relationships instead of achievements, that funnily in the end, if we examined closely: SWGL-PD*

Relasi, bukan prestasi.
