Meet Leo. He's a dancer.

This is my friend, Leo.

For the longest time, he loves dancing. Back from the days when he was only dancing for church performances, you could see it in his eyes. It shines through whatever he does: music, magazine articles, shoes, clothing. Leo loves dancing. And man, he does really good dancing. And I mean *really-really* good. The talent and passion is definetely there.

But what could a guy do by dancing? It really is not a popular path of living for men these days. I mean, a dancer? Really? Like, he dances and stuff? A man? Could he make a living out of it? Career? In Indonesia? Really? Only by shaking his booty? Could he feed his family? What would people think? What would his parents think?

These are probably the questions people ask when wondering about his future.

But for myself, I always, always, support and respect people who choose to chase their dreams and passion instead of walking a life dictated by questions like “What would people think?”

Just heard the news yesterday. It is such an amazing news, and our friends are buzzing as we speak talking how proud we are of him. The details are still blurry, but Leo is the first place winner of the Gatsby Styling Dance Contest, one of the new shows on TV. He beat contestants from all over Indonesia, and he’s leaving to Japan next year to fight against the winners from other countries.

It took a brave man to follow his passion and walk against the crowd.

So Leo, if you do win the Asia or World or Universe championship or whatever, you will most likely started out, yes, broke and miserable, while scraping for jobs and gigs. But at least you’ll be happy, and living the life that you yourself choose, putting to good use the gift that God has put inside you.

And even if you don’t, you’re already a winner in my eyes.

Edward

PS: Watch him on Trans7 this Saturday, 18 December on 7 pm. And do please scream your lungs out in front of the TV every time he shakes his booty.

Also you can shout encouragements to his wall

  1. Always love people that follow his/ her passion. Just like you, Edward! This story reminds me of my friend, Derry or now is known as DJ Dey. I’m not a clubber myself, and I knew Derry when he was still the keyboardist at Bunglon. When Bunglon was inactive, his passion in becoming a DJ had brought him to become the winner of Heineken Thirst Studio DJ competition in Indonesia back in 2006, and made it to top 12 for the International level. Too bad in Indonesia, artist as a profession is very underexposed, except for some singers and (sorry to say, untalented) sinetron actors.
